Discover the Historical Sanctuary of Ratac Monastery

Монастырь Ратац

Ratac Monastery is a historical sanctuary with a rich and mysterious history located on the eponymous cape in Sutomore. This place consists of the ruins of the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos of Ratac, which was built in the 14th century on the site of a 9th-century Catholic monastery. The sanctuary was established by members of the famous Serbian Nemanjić dynasty and existed for seven centuries before it was destroyed by Ottoman conquerors in the 16th century, like many other Orthodox monuments along the coast. During World War II, the monastery’s ruins were used by Italians as a bunker.

Uncover the Mysteries of Ratac Monastery

Despite its ruined nature, Ratac Monastery continues to attract Orthodox believers. Outdoor religious services are also held in memory of the founders of the monastery, Serbian Queen Helena and her son, King Milutin.

However, disputes about the ownership of the monastery persist – whether it belongs to the Catholic or Orthodox Church, adding to the mystery and enigma of this historical site.

If you’re interested in history and want to immerse yourself in an atmosphere of mystery, Ratac Monastery is a must-visit destination in Montenegro.
